The Best Way To Properly Care For Your Contact Lenses

If you wear contact lenses then there are some steps you need to follow in order to prevent conjunctivitis (redness or swelling) or other symptoms that are caused by bacterial infections of the eye.
Basic contact lens hygiene is easy to follow and will help to keep your eye healthy.

Before putting contacts into your eyes at any time you must wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Hands should be lathered and scrubbed for thirty seconds under warm water.

Inserting your contacts while standing over a bathroom sink is never a good idea, because a dropped lens means it will be swimming in bacteria from the sink, or you may even lose it down the drain. Instead work over a table with a mirror and over a clean desk. To ensure you do not mix up your lenses by mistake, open the case that holds your contacts one side at a time.

After the first lens in place, repeat the process for the second. Dump any remaining solution down the drain and rinse the case with clean contact lens solution.

Don’t touch the contact lens solution bottles mouth with anything. This will assist in maintaining the bottle and what ’s in it clean.

Although it’s not a good idea to ever rub your eyes, if you wear soft contact lenses, this is particularly important. Considerable damage could be caused if you were to scratch the cornea of your eye. Soft contact lenses should only be re-wetted with contact solution, never use water or saliva.

Watch your eyes for buildup of mucus like material. They should be removed and kept out until the problem has cleared up and this is an indication of a problem with the contacts. These give the eye time to heal and prevent contamination of the contact.

Every three months, the contact lens case should be replaced. You must replace your soft contact lenses as recommended by a physician. Don’t try to wear contact lenses for longer than suggested by a physician.
