Most people would love to have a double storey home. In fact, just check out the suburban neighbourhoods and you’ll see many of these built. People tend to worry less about the cost of it if they have the money. The structure alone would jack up the costs although the size of the lot can make it a little cheaper. Because of this, many people think that having a home with two storeys is quite a practical choice.

If you’re just starting up a family, you would certainly prefer a double storey home. However, the elderly would certainly balk at the idea of living in one. Younger couples and their kids don’t find the sheer size of the house or its design a challenge to their bodies. After all, their legs and knees are still strong enough to make the distance between the bedrooms and the living and dining rooms and dealing with the stairs is not a tedious task at all. You may even find out that such kind of house can help you stay fit.

However, if your grandmother is staying with you, you may have to bear with her annoying complaints about dealing with the stairs. For those who are already in their eighties, a single step or two may already be quite a challenge. Obviously, any facility with a staircase is no longer an aged person’s cup of tea. A spacious home can be a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for those who are younger but for those who are much older, it’s quite the opposite.

There is one major trouble that awaits the elderly in a double storey home. For you, ascending it may just be like walking a few yards but for your granny it can be like a steep hill. This is one feature that a two-storey home cannot avoid having. The elderly may have no choice but to deal with it if they happen to live in such a style of home. They may complain but still they have to bear the pain of climbing and descending the stairs.

An aged person who can no longer walk around easily may choose not to bother with the stairs. However, he’ll have a hard time calling for other people when he has to. Oftentimes, the activities are held on the first level because the kitchen, the living and dining rooms are there. He may have to make his voice much louder every time he has to call others below. Because of this, some homeowners may decide on putting a paging system in the house.

Just like many other families, you may not want to let your granny leave your double storey home. They have to make their homes convenient and comfortable for their beloved grandpa’s or grandma’s. A good idea would be to have a stair lift built for her. This device would certainly make the stairs easier for the elderly to deal with. Others, however, have decided to build a room downstairs. This will be devoted for the use of any elderly guest in the house.
