The world’s governments competed there in the 1920’s, 1930’s and a little bit in the 1940’s. The majority of national governments sending expeditions to Antarctica at last determined that it was way too costly to battle in the frigid dark and in the tempestuous seas. Military activity would be extremely difficult to pursue in the very hostile environment of Antarctica. The signing of the Antarctic Treaty, in 1959, brought a formal resolution of peace. To find antarctica cruise adventures information see this resource.

Twelve countries who had been on the continent for the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958 signed this short resolution. Determining that science would be the main international and national objective, the nations learned that IGY how to co-exist peacefully.
