Credit counseling involves the process of educating consumers to avoid any incurrence of debts that they cannot afford to repay. The process takes place through a planned budget and a Debt Management Plan. Counseling also studies the spending habits of the consumers and establishes the debt management methods in accordance with those habits. Credit counselors offering credit counseling enter into a negotiation with the creditors in order to create a competent Debt Management Plan (DMP) for their clients. The DMP helps the client or the consumer to repay through the process of effective debt management. Credit counselors negotiate for cut down in payment and interest with the creditors on behalf of the consumers. The DMP set by the counselors detail out the terms and conditions set by the negotiation with the creditors.
